Newfield School
Stay on Site Case Study
Newfield School was one of the first Sheffield Schools to engage in the stay on site programme. The school has been supported through the Sheffield Let’s Change4Life Programme with a grant of £10,000.
The aim of the policy is:
- To create a positive ethos around school where students are encouraged to eat healthily, feel safe and enjoy lunchtimes
The Head Teacher had noticed that large numbers of pupils were going off site at lunch time to buy unhealthy food and drinks; this was impacting on their attendance at school in the afternoon and on their behaviour.
A Stay on site working group was convened which includes the School Nurse, Learning Mentor, Assistant Head, Food Technology Teacher and the School Cook. The group developed an action plan and started with some initial pupil consultation. A whole lunch time review was carried out which included prefects monitoring queue times, counting the numbers of pupils leaving site at lunchtime and looking at the dining room environment.
A lunchtime charter was developed which is a formal agreement between the school and the pupils, this is displayed around school. The school reviewed the use of the dining rooms at lunch time and as a result changed which year groups go to which dining rooms, this has led to a safer environment for younger students, with younger pupils being given more space with activities available.
A new programme of lunch time supervision has been introduced which has led to pupils feeling safer; this has also led to incidents of poor behaviour at lunchtime being reduced.
