Flower 125 Dating

At the 125 review day we held a 125 speed dating activity where tables of facilitators discussed the following issues about the programme. Everyone was expected to change tables when a bell was rung!!! Here are the things that the facilitators came up with. You may find some of their suggestions useful.

Notes in green are things that we are considering for the future. Notes in blue link you to resources that can be found on the website. Notes in pink need further clarification-we will endeavour to get this.

The Model-How does it work for you?
  • Icons work well-need to be adapted for age of children
  • Rewards at end of session
  • The prize can become the main focus (positive or negative?)
  • Wrap the prize
  • Games
  • Fruit and water works very well. They choose fruit each week or we have fruit salad so that they try different fruits.
  • Some fruits work better than others
  • Feeling special
  • Ignoring some unwanted behaviour worked really well
  • Purchase a water bottle for each child and then they get to keep it-look out for 125 water bottles
New ideas for activities and games
  • Secret ballot for prize winner- click here to go to a young person’s nomination slip
  • Raffle tickets (?)
  • Y6 sitting on chairs-older students enjoy sitting on the floor in the drama room
  • Children’s rights-wants and needs game
  • My Island
  • Positive affirmation at the end of the session
  • Water game
  • Non-alcoholic punch/smoothies
  • Foot massage
  • Made pizzas-brought the whole group together
  • Pamper sessions-hand massages, facials etc
  • Taking skills out to others. Group doing the hand massage they have learnt on others/teachers at events or to raise money for charity.
  • Away day
  • Yoga session
  • Music/rainforest-click here for some music that you can download to use in a relaxation session
  • Laser zone visit
  • Self-awareness/confidence building
  • Guided imagery
  • Treat midway through the programme

Planning and the way you run the programme

  • Pick the children who would most benefit from the programme
  • Weekly sessions-Wednesday afternoons all Y6 on rolling programme
  • Age group and dynamics have to be right
  • Introduce your own activities but still use the model
  • Venue important
  • Keep activities short
  • Finding a space during school difficult
  • More space at the end of school
  • Venue
  • Time scale suggestions:
    • 11 X 1 hour 45 min sessions
    • 5 weeks-2 sessions a week
    • 7 weeks-1 hour a week
  • Staffing can be a problem-time needed for planning and admin time (e.g. shopping for fruit, gifts)
  • Need support from senior management
  • Needs to be timetabled properly
  • Informal meeting with young people before programme starts
  • Confidentiality
  • Minimum of 2 to run the group-ideally 3 one giving out icons 2 facilitating the activities
  • Plan backwards-plan treat first and then work out how much money you have for other things
  • Personally invite young people to take part.
