School Food Legislation For Food Served At Times Other Than Lunch
The food-based standards for food served by the school at times other than lunch became legislation in September 2007. The standards apply to all local authority maintained primary, special, secondary and pupil referral units in England and refer to all food provided by the school between 8.00am and 6.00pm. This includes breakfast club provision, tuck shops, mid-morning break services, vending machines and after-school snacks and meals.
Visit www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk and go to document and resources to download the guidance.
Schools achieving National Healthy Schools Status must meet the School Food Trust Standards for school food, if you would like support with this please contact the Sheffield Healthy Schools Programme Tel: 0114 305 1032
Running a Fair Trade Tuck Shop and Meeting the School Food Legislation
Many schools across the city successfully run fair trade tuck shops at morning/afternoon break or during lunchtime. The Healthy Schools Programme fully support the fair trade initiative and encourage schools to promote fair trade to the school community, some of the products being sold however may not meet the School Food Standards and may have to be removed from sale, this doesn't mean that your school cannot continue to run the tuck shop.
For guidance and a list of fair trade products that meet the standards please click here
