10 years of Healthy Schools
August 2010
It’s hard to believe that the National Healthy Schools Programme has been around for 10 years now!!! Most schools can’t remember life without it. Recently someone drew to my attention how far we have come during that time- only 5 or so years ago children and young people would have been able to buy as many cans of fizzy drink, packets of crisps and chocolate bars as they would have liked each day, every day! I go into schools to present them with their plaque when they achieve healthy schools status and I am surprised at the sophisticated answers that even the youngest child can give to the question “what does being healthy mean to you?” I think we have moved away from the view that healthy schools is about “chips and skipping”
To celebrate this auspicious event we have had 5 spectacular banners produced. The images on the banners were captured with the help of 10 healthy schools across the city. Schools have already received a copy of the banners as posters and we hope that they will be able to display them somewhere in the school and/or use them at events. The first 5 schools will receive a banner on the week beginning the 7th of June and they will be circulated to all schools that have healthy school status until the end of March 2011. Schools have now been given the schedule so that they know when to expect their banner.
We hope that schools will be proud to display the banner prominently so that visitors to the school can see for themselves the fantastic work that is going on in schools around the city.
(Update) 4 of the banners have been on display over the summer break; 2 at Bannerdale, 1 in the Town Hall and 1 in Howden House. Maybe you have seen them when you have been out and about in town!?!
