Teen LifeCheck at City School
January 2010
“The City School, Sheffield held a curriculum enrichment day entitled Healthy Mind/Healthy Body on 1st July 2009.
There was time during the day for young people to reflect on their health through the use of the Teen LifeCheck on-line tool. At the end of the session young people were asked to complete a postcard with their comments about the website and questionnaire. The postcards were collected in a box as the young people exited the session and they were told that some comments would be selected and used to make a promotional DVD for the Teen LifeCheck Programme. The “winners” would have the opportunity to take part in the DVD with a prize of 2 flip video cameras going to the school.
After lunch students were back in groups so that each of them could produce a Healthy Change Plan. This was done on a memory stick provided by the Sheffield Teen LifeCheck Programme. This had a healthy change template already loaded on it and the young people were able to use the information and lessons learnt from the day to construct an achievable plan of SMART targets to help them make changes to their lifestyle.
With the help of diva creative a marketing agency, Michelle Bridges, the school nurse and the person who masterminded the Healthy Mind/Healthy Body day looked through the comments that the young people had written and chose those that would be most suitable to be used in the DVD. On the 8th of July a group of 10 young people went to the offices of diva creative for the filming of the DVD. A good time was had by all and the young people had the experience of being filmed in front of a green screen (like the weather forecasters do!!!). The office dog, Matey, was very popular with the young people and the young people also had the chance to choose the background music for the DVD.
The DVD went into production over the summer holidays and was premiered to the group on the 12th October. I had the pleasure of being able to go to City School on the 6th of November where the DVD was shown to the whole of Year 9 in morning assembly. This group of young people have certainly had their couple of minutes of fame.
A copy of the DVD has now been sent to all secondary schools and we hope that they will use this as part of the second wave of promotion of the programme.
We are very pleased with the results of the DVD and it has now been passed on to the PR company that is responsible for promoting Teen LifeCheck nationally. We are hoping that it will be used to promote the programme in schools across the country.
I would like to pass on my thanks to Michelle Bridges, all of the young people from City that took part, and the staff from diva creative that were involved in the project.
Please have a look at the DVD and use it with any young people that you work with.
