Invitation to Phase 1 of Enhanced Healthy Schools

If your school has achieved National Healthy Schools Status then you may be interested in hearing what the next phase of your development will entail.

You and your school are invited to take part in the new Enhanced Healthy Schools Programme which was formally launched in London almost three weeks ago.

This programme will help embed healthy behaviours and well-being outcomes with the everyday activities of school life and has been designed to build upon the foundation work that has been achieved when a school has gained the National Healthy School Status.

The Enhanced Model will better equip schools to promote universal health improvement for all children and young people. It will also provide additional support targeted specifically to those children and young people in challenging circumstances.

The Healthy Schools Enhancement Model (HSEM) will provide vital leadership in translating into practice the Governments vision of the 21st Century School, helping to make this the best country in the world to grow up.

Schools participating in the Enhancement Model will have to maintain the universal provision established through achieving National Healthy Schools Status. Schools will work closely with key partners towards achieving locally agreed health and well-being outcomes. This will reflect school based local and national priorities as outlined in the Local Area Agreement; Children and Young People's Plans and Health's (PCT) operational Plans.

The Enhanced Model will continue to support schools in achieving the Every Child Matters agenda. It will provide schools with rigorous health and well-being evidence for school improvement plans, the Ofsted Self Evaluation From and the proposed pupil level well-being indicators and school report card.

The Enhanced Model should be able to be used to develop further a schools existing developments. It shouldn't be seen as 'yet another initiative'. So if a school is already involved in any of the following:

  • Reviewing the teaching of PSHE/SRE in readiness of the subject becoming statutory in 2011
  • Implementing the Targeted Mental Health Programme (TaMHS)
  • Developing SEAL to include Small Group SEAL; Family SEAL and Nurture Group Provision
  • Sheffield Lets Change 4 Life (previously Healthy Towns) Programme to prevent childhood obesity ("Stay on Site"; Cooking Clubs; Growing Clubs; SNAG Groups; "License to Cook" etc)
  • Seeing that the PESCLE Survey outcomes are improved year on year
  • "Achievement for All"
  • Personalisation agenda
  • CYPD's ECM Questionnaire

then the school has begun the Enhanced Model journey.

To join the Enhanced Healthy Schools Programme you need to return the enclosed reply slip before Friday 23 October; having identified a member of staff who will lead this initiative in your school. This member of staff should have been involved with Healthy Schools previously and be closely linked with the SMT/SLT. This member of staff and yourself will need to attend a briefing on Thursday 3 December, 1-4pm, more details of which can be found by contacting Tim Ward on 0114 250 6730.

At this briefing the Healthy Schools Team will go over the various steps that need to happen. The first of these being, identifying the schools priorities. It is hoped that the priorities will be sorted by the school by Easter 2010.

If you wish to look at the Enhanced Healthy School Model in greater details I would suggest having a look at the National Healthy Schools website ›
